Backlighting is a great technique that can be used to create artistic images. A while back we demonstrated a backlighting technique with still life when the light was being projected onto background using continuous light source (clamp lamp). Today Nick Carter demonstrates (in video above) how to take advantage of available window light and use it as the main light-source.

Backlighting Technique

Light source should be behind the subject.  

Tips:

1. To avoid flair the subject should block the light source completely.
2. If using back light that is projected from 135 to 180 degree angle the lens should have a lens hood attached to avoid flair.
3. Sometimes flair can ad a unique creative feel (disregard tip 1 and 2)

Backlighting technique can be used very effectively for any type of photography: Portraiture, still life, architectural, food, weddings... you name it.
