The holidays are associated not only with joy, quality time with the family and friends but also with a hangover.  The morning after, it feels like it takes an eternity for the Alka-Seltzer tablet to dissolve in water.  And that’s, pretty much, where the idea for this tutorial came from.

Tips for freezing the motion:

Freezing the motion means stopping time. There are two variables that can control time in photography: When using continuous source it’s the shutter speed and when using flash it’s the duration of light.

Continuous light:

Shutter speed of 400/sec and greater will stop the motion. The freezing effect will gradually increase with the shutter speed up to 2000/sec

Shoe Mount Flash:

Shoe mount speed lights are great for stopping the action, The duration of flash on the shoe-mount flash is really short, thus making it a great motion stopping tool.  Most of the shoe-mount flashes can be used off camera and sync using wireless or optical slaves or the sync cord.

Studio Flash:

Studio flash generally will have a shorter duration at its lowest power setting. In the video above, we used 200ws setting on a 2400ws power pack.
So give this tutorial a try and post your results.
